Karnataka is a state where BJP and Congress fought a bitter election in 2024. After a huge win in the assembly elections and amid a opposition busy in infighting, Congress planned a bigger win in Karnataka. But at the end BJP denied it the advantage through some last minute smart moves.
The Congress won 9 out of 28 seats and repeated its 2014 tally in the State. While the performance was highly commendable, but it fell short as per the target it set during the planning phase. The political dynamics played by the BJP-JDS alliance was better than what Congress expected.
The best performance for Congress came from the area represented by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. It won all the 4 seats from here and this was a repeat of the trend seen in this area in 2023 also.
In 2023, Congress got at least 50% of the seat share in each region of the state, except the Coastal Karnataka. But the region-wise performance of Congress in 2024 was totally different from its performance in 2023.
The Complete Consolidation of Vokkaliga behind the NDA due to BJP alliance with JDS pulled down Congress in multiple areas. While the Prajwal Revanna case may have defamed the Devegowda family and the JDS party, the all out attack by Congress in this issue led to sharp polarization of Vokkaliga votes in favor of JDS.
If the BJP and JDS succeed in cornering Ligayat and Vokkaliga votes, things may get difficult for Congress in the near future.
